2024
It started in late 2024. Simon Willison began asking every new LLM the same deceptively simple prompt: "Generate an SVG of a pelican riding a bicycle." The results were... instructive.
Two circles joined by a triangle. The pelican is a grey oval for the body, a circle for the head and has a peak that looks like a yellow banana smile. A wing is hinted at with an upside down curved li

2025
2025 brought an explosion of new models — and with them, an avalanche of pelicans. Chinese open-weight models entered the chat. Reasoning models learned to think about bicycle geometry. Coding agents tried iterating. The pelicans got better. The bicycles remained tricky.
Hardly recognizable pelican on a bicycle
This is not great. The bicycle is a trapezoid. The pelican is very warped and has a orange diamond beak above its head.
The bicycle is better but the pelican is yellow and looks more like a baby chick. Its beak is squashThis one is pleasingly avant-garde. The bicycle does at least have two wheels joined by a frame. The

This one is pretty good. Bicycle is mostly the right shape, the pelican is perched quite awkwardly on the saddle, it has quite a good attempt at the chain mechanism.
